Chinese Language Training for Irish Secondary School Teachers

Introduction

This free training course is designed for Irish teachers who have no previous knowledge of Chinese, and are interested in teaching Chinese language and culture in schools. It is aimed at helping Irish teachers build their language capacity and basic skills for teaching Chinese. Students who completed the training courses should have the language capacity to pass the entrance examination of the Professional Diploma in Teaching Chinese Language and Culture.

Venue and time

Class for 2016/17 will run from September 2016 till May 2017, 1.5 hours per week, for 30 weeks.

Venue 1: University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4

Venue 4: Online. (Online class is carried out via Google Hangout. You will need a computer/laptop with reliable internet connection. A camera and headphone will maximize your learning effect. Using smart phone or iPad is not recommended for online class.)

  

Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of the course, students should be able to:

        ·       Talk about topics related to daily and school life, such as oneself, friends, family, food, time and weather, job, hobby, transport and travel;

        ·       Recognize 250 words of core vocabulary;

        ·       Lay a good foundation for further study of Chinese. Students who completed the training course should achieve the language proficiency required to pass the entrance examination of the Professional Diploma in Teaching Chinese Language and Culture. It is fully backed up by multimedia courseware which focuses on the training of Chinese communicative competence and on motivating learners by providing various exercises and games within each lesson.  Certificate and Qualification 

A final exam will be arranged following completion of the course. Students will receive a certificate of completion based on attendance and final exam result.

Diploma in Teaching Chinese

  • Programme Overview

    This course is designed to meet the growing demands of Chinese teaching and learning in schools in Ireland. For teachers who have already mastered the pedagogy in Irish schools but do not have sufficient knowledge of Chinese language and culture, this course will provide them with the opportunity to develop and enhance their competence in teaching Chinese language and culture in schools.Any teachers who are qualified to teach in schools in Ireland, or who are interested in working in a relevant areaand have passed the entry examination for this course held by Irish Institute for Chinese Studies at UCD are eligible to apply for this course.

    1 year part-time

    Qualification Awarded

    For the students who have successfully completed the programme, an award GPA is calculated and a professional diploma in Teaching Chinese Language and Culture in School is awarded.
